Easy . He hyped the fight to get people to attend , this was his pay the purse was very small . He placed wagers on himself to win , so his old trick was to look ill during training and raise to odds . No big money advance for his fights , he had to work .

With Johnson being a black champion, the hype was built in. Blacks were excited because Johnson was the first black champion and he cowered to no one. White people flocked to his fights in the hope he would lose. People who truly enjoyed boxing went to his fights to see his brilliance in the ring. And at the time boxing was so much bigger than it is today. Newspapers always gave the sport a lot of ink.

Jack Johnson lived in a different era, where Afro Americans were supposed to be subservient. He fought battle royales for a plate of food, if he was lucky if not he got nothing but abuse and cigar butts in his back.. They called him a coward but he walked down the street where they having a Klu Klux Klan rally. A man who could speak several languages fluently and play the cello. A man like Paul Robeson who wasn't appreciated by his country, too talented too black.
