A great fighter, one of the top 5 heavyweight champs of all-time. Was he a "good" champ? Depends on what you mean by "good." He could fight, but he was a character who listened to no one. He made many black Americans proud as the first BLACK heavyweight champ. But he cavorted with prostitutes. Was a notorious speeder in his autos which he usually wrecked.
He had a vicious streak and beat women. He had a great smile and a great sense of himself. Poorly educated, he spoke with a transatlantic or British accent, knew passable French and Spanish, taught himself double bass...knew a bit of Beethoven and opera, too. There was no one like him. He was right for his time (excepting his violence toward his prostitute "wives")
He won't be forgotten for a few more centuries, at least!

He beat a much smaller Tommy Burns for the title in 1908 and kept the title until 1915. Yes he was an all time great that was villified because of his love of white women and for being very controversial and brash. He had superior ring skills.

I suppose it depends what you mena by "ggod champ." He was one of the greatest boxers of all-time but was dogged by the racism of the era. He fought a lot of "White Hopes" that were inferior boxers. However, I have read that he ducked Sam Langford and some of the other prominent black fighters of his era.
