hmmm I can think of several problems to which the above could be the solution so I checked out your details to see which problem most suited what I could find out (enabling a better quess!! and filling in time ignoring what i should really be doing!!). I was going to suggest the problem may be a junkie stranded on a dessert island with his/her stuff but no way of injecting it - but then I read your lists (scarily good lists!!!) and decided that was not the problem at all - so I think this may be the real problem - a mystic charmer barters for his life with his evil tormenter. They agree that if the mystic can levitate above a bed which, if laid on will kill him, he can walk away free. The mystic prepares himself and his ruse (?) to perfection and will levitate over a board covered in nails or otherwise sharp objects, several of which will be tipped with poison. The day of his impending freedom arrives, and he finds the evil tormenter has taken every nail out of the building!! Freedom will not be his without these nails. He searches in vain, his panic rising................until he sees a delivery man with a large box. Inside the box is................a years supply of tough, sparkling, unused needles in glittering Taiwanese steel!!!!!!
He goes on to complete his challenge and much to the frustration and fury of the evil tormenter, gains his freedom. hooray!
