If your partner was aware that you are afraid of dogs, and got one anyways, I suggest that he doesn't really care about your needs and you should rethink his suitability as a mate. A relationship should be a two-way street. Is he selfish in other ways?

This dog is an innocent, loving and dependent creature who needs a good home. Your partner is very loving and giving to be adamant about keeping the dog. A partner who loves dogs or any animals is a good catch usually! Can you not see this? If your partner is willing to offer love and commitment to a dog - how much more would he offer such things to you? Perhaps you should feel grateful to have a partner who takes such responsibilities seriously - it speaks to the character of your friend. To ask someone to give up a needy dog is the same as asking a person to "get rid" of a child! Would you ask your partner to get rid of his child? Or would you, out of love of this person, try to get to know and like the child? I think this entire question speaks to the capacity that a person has for love. Some people have compassionate, loving, giving hearts and some people just don't. Which are you?

How can you expect him to get rid of his dog, get over your fear of dogs and just get to know the dog, you will eventually get rid of the fear and love for the animal will replace the fear, go for counciling, if you don't want to do that then you don't truly care for your man.

Give away your dog to a person that cares and loves dog very much. If your partner wants to see the dog, he can always visit the dog provided that the person is your partner's friend or someone your partner knows. Your partner can socialised with his or her friends and take care of the dog at the same time. A sop called "one stone kills two bird" style of getting rid of the pet.

Get over it - spend more time with the dog and you will learn that they are wonderful. A dog is not a possesion that you just get rid of like returning a sweater to the store.

If your partner really loves dogs, then it isn't really wise to give him the 'it's me or the dog'. I know of people who got over their fear for dogs after their partners got a dog. So you can try too.

You are the one with the irrational fear. Now's your chance to get to grips with it and experience the joys and rewards of dog ownership. Get the dog properly trained too.

If he went against your wishes and won't get rid of the dog, you already have your answer. He's made his choice. Either deal with it, get couple's therapy or find yourself another place to live. Sorry, but there it is.
