500ma or 1/2 amp is the electrical current rating of the secondary windings of the transformer. the rating is the maximum continous current the tramsformer can give safely. the transformers are designed to have a 200% surge over rating, meaning it can supply 1 amp for a short time before it flames out. if you need more power, get a larger transformer. also when you try to get more current out of a transformer than its rating, the output voltage will drop.

It is an electrical supply device that will output a maximum of 500 milliAmps (1/2 Amp). It is probably device specific, meaning that it can only be used for the item it was intended to power.
