He's a two-year-old west highland terrier.
We're emigrating and he's coming too. But if he comes straight away, he'll have to go into quarantine. One of our other options is to leave him with a friend for 2-3 months.

Japan is the country that requires quarantine for untested/unvaccinated animals as a precaution against rabies.
One respondent here said "dogs can't tell time". Our dog drags his leash over to me each day with uncanny timing that you could set your watch by.

If he knows your friend then it mght be ok but in general its not such a good idea. leave him for a day at your friends house and see if they get along and then come for him to show him youre gonna be there for him. one downside of leaving him with someone is depression which will cause fatness. but if they treat him well and he is fine being with someone new then go for it its better than quarantine. so check how he fits with friends. make sure they have all his stuff and his type of food so he feels like at home! I wish you all the best!

Keep it with friends, depending how long quarantine is. I imagine the quarantine is just a precaution the dog is not sick, but any seperation from the owners can be a bit traumatic on a dog, but some dogs do not mind and they are fine while some dogs go into deep depression, and will not eat and stay depressed. It depends on the dog and their attachment to their owner.

You can leave him with your friends for a hundred years, and he'll still have to be quarantined, for the same original period, when you ship him, anyway. I'd be tempted to say that he'd be better off just biting the bullet, and doing time, at the quarantine centre. It's quite expensive to do it, though. If you can't afford it, or aren't too attached to him, i'd let him go. I got my dog, when she was 4 years old, and she's fine with me. ( I took her, or she was being put down, for attacking a cow). Hard choice, though. Better you, than me.......

He should be ok, but i think he will really, really miss you. Dogs are retarded attached to their owners, and he may even suffer from seperation anxiety. It will definitely be hard for him, but make sure your friend treats him well and he will be stoked to be back with you when you come to get him.

there's no question separation anxiety is stressful to dogs but sometimes these things can't be avoided in life.
