Neonatal infection is most likely in premature infants - especially very low birth weight babies. They have a very immature immune system that can make the especially susceptible to infections. They may get this from their surroundings or visitors and neonatal ICU nurses and neonatalogists are trained to observe these babies to detect the presence of an infection. They may also perform blood and body fluid tests and will treat the baby with a variety of antibiotics. The antibiotics may require monitoring to make sure baby gets enough to fight infection, but not so much that it is toxic,
Full term babies may also get infections for the same reason - they also do not have a mature immune system and may "catch" something from their surroundings or visitors. The greatest risk is during the delivery itself. Usually if mom is suspected to be infected with something that may harm the baby during vaginal delivery - such as Group B Strep, HIV, Herpes, or other STD, then a C-section may be performed to decrease chances of passing it on to baby. Sometimes you can do everything right and still baby can get an infection.

A neonate can get an infection before, during or after delivery. Infection can be acquired from the mother , the delivery room and equipment or from other persons near or handling the baby. There may be non - specific signs such as high or low body temperature, vomiting, lethargy, poor feeding, fast or shallow breathing, jaundice, low blood sugar. There may be fits or bleeding such as in vomit or stool. Infection may not remain localized to one part and may spread in the blood and involve many systems. Diagnosis is by blood tests and other tests like X ray and lumbar puncture.

If a neonatal baby has an infection the doctor would diagnose it. Babies can get many different types of infections especially premature ones or neonatal ones.
