I think, indirectly one can. I have known people to be bored with food (genuinely). In the extreme end of that comes anorexia; and that can be lethal.

I had a job one time that became very boring. After 7 years i actually started to cry on the job. I was bored to tears. Honestly, I know the phrase sounds like a cliche but I experienced it for real. If I felt that bad I guess it could lead to other problems and bad life choices. Yes, I do believe one could die of bordom.

According to some sites you can....

........Not directly but boredom can lead to depression and anxiety disorders which might make you want to top yourself. If that doesn’t get you then you are more likely to die from illness due to boredom causing reduced immunity in your body. Bored old folkes can develop dementia if they don’t exercise their grey matter, so to ward that off we recommend you stimulate your grandparents as much as possible...........

Probably not, but a man did actually die of depression.

Following the death of his wife, he entered into depression which became worse and worse until he became catatonic. He remained like that unable to move or respond to anything. He eventually died.

The following text make shock some. Please do not read if graphic descriptions of medical conditions upset you.

The post mortem to establish a cause of death found no apparent malfunction of the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys etc.

However when they opened up his head they discovered that his brain had turned to mush. ie. It had died and started to decompose.

So, in a sense, his inactivity caused his brain to shut down to the point where it was no longer able to keep him alive.

I never heard of people dying from boredom, but I've seen stories about how someone's head exploded while playing chess.

Google it.

I don't think so, but George Sanders committed suicide because of it! His suicide note read:

Dear World, I am leaving you because I am bored. I feel I have lived long enough. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool - good luck.

George Sanders, British actor, d. April 25, 1972

Ha ha that's good. I suppose if you sat in the same place for long enough being bored then you wouldn't move to eat or drink and that could kill you.
