If I got hit in the face by a pro fighter, I'm sure I would either be knocked unconscious or it would hurt so bad I'd have to proceed directly to the hospital. So how are boxers able to take it? When you see them on TV, they're constantly getting nailed square in the nose and it doesn't seem to faze them at all. Surely their nerves are just as sensitive as anyone else's. Is getting punched in the face something you can get accustomed to with experience?

well if they see the punch coming they can 'ride it' which means that they use their neck and torso as a shock absorber and move with the punch to reduce the impact. if they dont see the punch, it hurts more and it's the punches they don't see comingthat often knock them out.

The other thing is, they do get used to being hit, in sparring you get hit in the face a lot. when you are in a fight, even in training or sparing, your body releases adrenaline and you can take more punishment than you would believe. It's after the fight that the pain kicks in. But you do get used to it, the body adapts.

Some people have a hard head and could withstand many punch without getting permanent damage for example George Chuvalo. Some pay for it later in life just like Muhammad Ali. It's all about seeing the punch coming so it won't hurt as much or having the ability to absorb the punch.

At first it would seem that the effects will not show on a boxers face, if he is adept. But within time, the punches to the head will affect his brain, become 'mush mouthed' and dillusional. With the exception of Ray Leonard and George Foreman, I cannot think of anybody who has fought a lot who did not suffer after effects from this.

The best preventative for getting hit in the face is defense. It's really important to keep your gloves up at all times.
