I prefer the regular green tea by Lipton but I am diabetic and do not need all the carbs and extra sugar.

maybe the sugar substitute in the diet tea is composed of sugar alcohols, giving it the strange aftertaste.

It's you. I drink the diet variety myself and it tastes nothing like malt liquor to me. Maybe you were eating something highly spiced while drinking it?
