It depends on what the make up of the stone is. Most kidney stones are made of calcium, therefore excessive calcium intake can lead to more stones. Keeping yourself well hydrated with water can make some difference, avoiding alcohol. These are probably the best things you can do.

I had kidney stones (they hurt like hell don't they?) and was told to make sure I drank plenty of fluid every day - at least 2 litres. This is to stop the crystals that make up a lot of kidney stones from forming by continually flushing the system through.

There are now home treatments available - no idea whether they work though... see http://www.uriflow.com

There is an ecellent site here with information including more suggestions for prevention: http://kidney.niddk.nih.gov/kudiseases/pubs/stonesadults/

Do you eat a lot of citrus, drink a lot of orange or grapefruit juice, or take a lot of vitamin C? These things are notorious for causing some people to have recurrent kidney stones. Do you have regular medical managment for this? If it is only dealt with on an acute basis and not on a regular followup basis you are getting to the problem too late. If you already know that you are prone to getting them you should talk to your doctor about chronic treatment to keep them from forming in the first place; whether it be a medication or dietary modifications. If your doc offers you no recommendations I would insist on a referral to a specialist.

Drink water only with a filter...I prefer Brita over Pur. Make certain that you only drink filtered water. To promote good health of kidneys, drink 1 alcoholic beverage per day minimum and plenty of sugar-free juices. Cranberry cocktails are highly reccommended by doctors.

Shouldn't you be asking your doctor this question? Ask a Urologist. Don't ask a bunch of non-professional strangers on the Internet for God's sake. Why would you do this? If you are serious about your health and have real health issues seek the advice of a doctor. Would you take your car to the grocery store to be repaired? Doesn't your doctor know you and have your personal medical history and has examined you and seen you? We don't and we are not doctors .lol. Geez!

to prevent kidney stones, you need to control your diet...you must not take food in high iron content (like spinach etc), drink more water (not mineral water), do more exercise and try to take less sugar, salt and oil.....i heard that by drinking a lot of fresh lemon juice will help dissolve the stones.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
