Because, like PT Barnum said, there's a sucker born every minute. Or was that WC Fields? The sentiment stands. They're evil vultures taking money from desperate people. Add Benny "Luxury Hotel" Hinn to that list.

That is a strange collection of names. Jim Jones and David Koresh presented themselves as modern day messiahs. People who are not strong in their own beliefs are easily led by people who claim to know all the answers. Jimmy Swaggert and Jim Bakker are flim flam artists who benefitted by being on television. They were able to project an image that was appealing and hopeful. Both men were shameless when it came to separating litle old women from their money and putting themselves into their wills. These are pretend Christians. Swaggert is an actor. He can cry at the drop of a hat when in front of the cameras. The world will never run out of gullible people.

Well Jim and Jimmy are professed Christians but Jim Jones and Koresh were not. Infact Koresh said he was a reincarnation of Jesus (as if Jesus had many of them) dont confuse the religions being taught by either.
As far as believing Bakker and Swaggart there may be a small FEW that listen to them as though they are actually "gifted prophets" Most Christians see them as just preachers at best. I think a lot of you hear the gossip about Christians yet never think to actually ask one and thats where half the trouble lies.

The believers do see flaws in the preacher, but he is just god's microphone and subject to static...the message is more important than the messenger. The Christian religion is an all-or-nothing proposition, either you're in or you're most definitely out. Once Christians are "in" they lose all powers of discrimination and think every preacher(of their faith) is blessed and holy.
The preachers you named are all crackers and dope smackers or motel sackers. The only way a Jim Jones or David Koresh can have a cult following is to prey on weak minds and lost sheep. If they really cared about helping people, they wouldn't ask for cash or burden them with guilt and shame.

Plain and Simple. All these guys started out to be clean cut squared away leaders. They said and did all the right things in order to gain people's trust. After a while, the success and power went to their head. Therefore, altering their original plan that ultimately lead them down a path of destruction. Much like what will happen when the Antichrist comes after Jesus returns to take his people home. People are always looking for anwers!!

Because too many religions imply the role of Jesus is an obtainable role. but the scriptures state that he will descend and all the world will know, not just a few select. His first return was his rising from the dead and was like a thief in the night, his second coming, well in Revelation it says that even the elect will be confused. Thankfully, I should be dead by then.

I went to a building called miracle city church in Adelaide South Australia a few years ago.
There was a crippled man sitting in the front row. The preacher was proclaiming jesus, or maybe god was in that room at that very moment.
The divine being was he said informing him of peoples problems and in a room where at least 20 people where over 60 he said he was told people had back pain.
the preacher said he loved the sound of dollar notes as people donated.
he is not in gaol(jail) for you americans
sacred beliefs are too hard for governments to prosecute against unless the preacher is very obvious in his scam.
Like other industries religeon needs a watch dog to ensure the wellbeing of it's followers.
Many reasons exist for why people follow these preachers,
but in essence they are just vulnerable people searching for answers or miracles or proof.

People need something to believe in and it is too bad that they can not believe in something on just faith so they have to look to another human.
The problem with looking to a human as a gateway to a god is that humans are not gods and they have human faults.
Greed and Vanity are some of the human faults that leader of Religions start to have when they get many people looking to them for guidance.
Kill to save you family from an attacking person, kill to save your land from someone taking it from you, just don't kill because some religious leader tells you that it is for your god.

Some people have trouble correlating life to the ambiguities of the Bible. The people you listed draw people of that type to them because of their strong beliefs in what they say. Basically, they provide the answers some seek.
