what does go into heat means? i generally know what it means, but what exactly does it mean?

it means that she's throwing out the pheremones that tell guy dogs, "I'm feelin' Sexy, take me home Baby!", this is Usually discovered by the sudden increase in the male dog population in your yard... and ALL of them doing doggy versions of " I got what cha' need little Momma!" ..... good luck.

“Heat” is the word used to describe a female dog’s menses cycle. Usually the first signs include a swelling of the vulva, clear vaginal discharge, restlessness, bloody discharge, and more demanding of your attention. The first part of the “heat” cycle lasts anywhere from five to fourteen days, depending on the dog breed and size. During this initial period, the female tends to repel any interest from male dogs. Once the next cycle starts, you will find her doing her best to get ANY male dog interested in her. Our female dogs tend to run our one unaltered male dog ragged when they start their cycles. Our girls tend to cycle as a group, with one starting about a week or so after the other. By the time the last female completes the cycle, the male dog has lost a pound or two from all the work. If the female dog does not mate, she will enter the final stage of the heat cycle. Her body spends the next six to ten weeks figuring out that it is not pregnant. She may experience a “false pregnancy” where you may notice swelling of the teats, mothering of stuffed toys, and other behavior otherwise consistent with a pregnant dog.

It means in the first week she is getting ready to breed...in the second week she is ready to breed...and in the third week she is starting to go out of heat...it means she can have puppies in about 63 days...
