They know a lot about dentistry but they will refer you to a specialist, in this case a dentist.
Most doctors are pathologists. What this means is that they have a good general knowledge of pathology. However, in cases where they are unsure what is causing your ailment, they will refer to a specialist in that field.

MBBS, Just a little. In the preclinics dental anatomy is just a page. Usually there is a 2 wks dentistry clinical posting, which most would bunk. In ENT and surgery medical doctors learn something ralated to dent....like maxillary fractures...adamantinomas (tumors with relation to gums) etc..

well doctors dont need to know dentistry in depth, all they really need to know is how to recognise a dental problem and who to send them too....its like trying to compare a physics teacher to a biology teacher...there both science teachers but they have their own field...besides as someone said earlier doctors deal with a much bigger range of problems and therefore just out of medical school they have a level of knowledge in all aspects of the body, after which they will eventually specialise in a chosen field.....

Not alot i would of thought, Doctors need to learn about the whole body where as Dentists only need to learn about the mouth. Doctors do their nut if you go to them with a dental related problem,IE an abscess and just tell you to go and see your dentist.

not much. they know what a tooth is.. and the simple stuff after they finish med school. after a few years, they probably know nothing about teeth. they are medical doctors. there are dentists to deal with teeth. Although... specialists (MDs) don't know much about stuff outside their specialty either. a surgeon doesn't know much about oncology... but they sure are good at surgery. and an oncologist doesn't know much (if anything at all) about surgery... but they are very good at cancers.

Not a lot. GP's are just that "General " Practioners. In depth knowledge in any medical/dental field requires reference to the appropriate specialist.
