Staying in LA a few days pre-cruise. Looking to see the sights. Should I rent a car, or are there lots of shuttles/taxis to get around with? (Don't want to spend a fortune on taxi's)

Thanks!

Car all the way.
Lots of car rentals come with "Neverlost" - a GPS travel guide.
It will save you the hassle of trying to find things like freeway entrances and exits, where to turn and how to get places.
Car rental isn't very expensive and you cannot rely on the public transpo here.
Car gives you freedom to see things on your own time schedule and if you want to leave early, or stay longer, you are your own boss.
And contrary to popular beliefs, driving in LA isn't so bad.

Definitely rent a car. You will have to call for a cab almost everytime you walk out a door. They don't just cruise and pick people up here, except for a few nightlife areas in the wee hours.

Rent a car, you'll see more sights and you get to spend as much or as little time as you want in a particular area. Driving is a pain but at the same time there's more flexibility when you drive.

Personally I would take a tour with a guide. Easiest way to get around and see a lot in a short time. My tour was great and the the tour bus explained everything from The Dakota to World Trade Center.
Check for tours on the web for New York.

Car. Taxis will rip you off. Busses have freaky people on them, and the subway stops in some baaaaaaad parts of town. Also the sites are so spread out you will definitely want a car.
