I know I am a good server, and I don't understand why people profusely thank me and tell me how great I was and then leave 10%, or less, after I sang happy birthday to their bratty kids and rushed their order out because they were in a hurry. It happens every day, and I am sick of rude people. If you don't want to tip go to Mc Donalds.

Hey Sunshine, we ARE NOT in Japan and people in Japan and other countries get paid a normal hourly wage not $3 an hour. This is why I expect tips from any decent person. Seriously to whomever said if they is a mandatory tip percentage they leave, you are obviously trash.

Just think if you keep tipping trashy, menu prices will go up to pay the servers who aren't getting tipped. If you have a server that isn't working for tips, do you really think they are gonna care about your experience? Think about the service you get at Mc Donalds, that's that will happen when you go to a restaurant now. SO people like you will ruin the experience of dining out for everyone.

And BTW, I work at an upscale restaurant, not some crappy diner, and people tip like everywhere, fine dining included. It is a lack of class and manners which everyone should be appalled at.

oh well, I graduate in December and then I will never have to deal with any of you terrible people again. I can only hope that people are equally as rude to you at your place of work.

People who are crappy tippers have never worked in the food industry. They don't realize that your base pay is usually around $2 or $3/hr PLUS tips, i.e. tips are the bulk of your paycheck. They obviously also think you live and eat at the restaurant b/c you obviously don't need $ for food or rent, or you know, to live. They're also without a shred of human decency or empathy. My hubby and I always tip 30% unless the waitress is really, really bad (like the chick who told me something didn't have crab in it b/c it was made to order, but it was pre-made and she picked the crab out and my throat swelled shut...we didn't tip her...but she almost became a murderer, so I figure my kharma is still good...). Sorry people are cheap b@stards. :(

In a perfect world, servers would get a decent wage and tips wouldn't be in out vocabulary. Years ago I worked in a local dinor. 95% of the customers were locals that were there several times a week and never tipped. I was able to buy food and pay rent and that was about all. You get a second waitress job to pay the rest and the tips there aren't much better.

People are just selfish, period. They've come to expect impeccable service and don't feel the need to pay for that. It depends on the kind of restaurant you work at - of course higher end restaurants will attract a better clientele for tipping. So, I guess it comes down to the segment of the population you serve. Sounds like you're at a lower end restaurant...try getting into a nicer place where singing happy birthday to a screaming 4 year old isn't the norm. :)

I am usually a really good tipper but occasionally I'll miscalculate. I think many people don't really think about it. They just leave what feels right to them but are too lazy or dumb to do the math. I really think that some people figure that if dad always left $5 then that must be right. Doesn't matter if dinner costs twice what it did then. Others really are just cheap. I know some who will leave 90 cents change rather than round up to the next dollar.

Don't be so selfish. You're complaining about how you're not getting a good enough tip when a tip isn't required. You should be so lucky. In Japan you don't leave tips. In other countries you just DON'T. Don't be so greedy. Accept what you get. Don't be nice because u get money, that's stupid. Be nice because that's who you are. If you need money to make you do nice things then I wouldn't tip you, I'm sorry. It's the truth. Look at yourself.

ahhhh....the economy is rough out there, specially for family folks...right? Nontheless, you should be thankful, as 10% of something is more than 10% of nothing...I'm pretty sure that 90% of the times you get way more than 10% more like 20% or more depeding on the amount spent...and like any other job, if you feel you can do better elsewhere than you should go elsewhere to earn your money.

You are not the only waitress in the world with this problem, this goes to every waitress out there, so don't take it personal.

I tip what I feel I can afford...and what the waitress deserves. No more, no less. When there's a sign that states that there's a mandatory tip percentage, I'll change restaurants. There's nothing ruder than a waitress that complains about her tips.
