because it is cheap and easy. I try to eat as nutritious as I can but it can be very very expensive, and being a married college student, sometimes it's a dollar double cheeseburger is what I can afford. It drives me nuts though, I wish I could afford to make fruit shakes for breakfast every morning but, all the fruit and juice that would require is far more expensive than a box of cerial. Also, we are just plain lazy in the US, as shows by our problem with obesity. Frainkly it makes me sick, I don't know how some people can care so little about themselves that they would let themselves get that way.

We Americans are as different as there are foods to choose from. Many of us eat appropriately balanced meals and as many don't. I am extremely healthy and am older, but due to having been raised by great parents who taught me to eat healthfully, I have remained healthy. And I was also breast fed which I personally believe has much to do with a healthy immune system as one ages. Yes, Americans have easy access to junk food on a daily basis, and some people eat it or it wouldn't be sold, but time will tell if the younger generation is eating healthy because if they aren't, they won't live long healthy lives. Not only do healthy foods help us to age gracefully, it helps us keep our teeth and never lose them to false ones. I think America advertises junk food a lot and gives the impression more junk is eaten than it is. And there's lots of news stories about poor health and overweight young children, but everybody doesn't fit the descriptions. When the media uses the term, "everybody," people think that's what it means, but it's a generalized term that is grossly inaccurate.

Hmm...

I'm going to try to approach your question without being an ***, although I'm tempted to because I'm American and I would never ask you a broad, sweeping question that incriminates all the people from your country.

I'm from California, I guess we're the "fruit and nut" state, and I know myself, my family, and my friends eat pretty well. I take time out of my day to make nutritious, healthy food because I want to take care of myself.

But yeah, I LOVE my burritos, tacos, and hamburgers. I'm not going to adhere to such a strict diet that I can't have a treat every once in a while. And yes, sometimes I'm running late for school or work and I need to eat; McDonald's is faster than cooking up salmon and veggies.

I think that as a country, we are making strides to become much healthier. There is a big focus on working out, and most restaurants/fast food places have healthy options. We're moving in the right direction, and that's what matters.

I'm sure your country has faults also, right?

because Americans have a fast paced life thats always on the go. Many are in a hurry to go to work, school ect and dont have the time to cook a healthy meal at home, so they grab the next available food that is hot and ready to go: Junk food/fast food. Fast food is a convenient stop for many americans because its practically at every corner and besides its cheap and fast, your in and out of there in less than 5 minutes, thats helpful for people that are in a rush.

I will guess you are not from USA. We work very long hours ( most of the people about 10-12/day) and that means:
* We are too tired most of the time to go home and cook after long day.
* Can not wake up earlier than we already do to prepare lunch so we eat lunch also out..
And the junk food is the cheapest, most affordable, and very accessible one..
( I am not from USA .. but I lived there 4 years.. and I turned into junk eater.)

Hi. Perhaps it is just because they can. They have an incredible diversity of foodstuffs in America, being that "Melting Pot" culture. This gives them all those ethnic foods to try from.
Also wanted to add here- what is with this "American" descriptor-why wasn't it a "people eat so much junk" sentence? If you have spent any time in America, you can't avoid seeing their nation's gigantic Health Craze Trend/Dieting Fads, going on!

No bc its a government conspiracy. Food that is healthy for you is expensive. And junk food isn't, in the long run yes; but nobody thinks about it. That's why you can go to McDonald's and get a whole meal for $3.50, but a small salad is $4.00. The govt is rackin up those tax dollars off of obese people.

Not all Americans eat rubbish. Those who have a choice to eat right and then choose not to eat right are abstracting themselves and their health, sort of like how children abstract life and do not comprehend their mortality. Eating rubbish is a mental disturbance of immaturity and denial.

Because in America there are machines that literally cram junk food down our throats. We have to report to these factories once a day. Then you're put in this chair like a dentist's chair(if you're from England you won't know what I'm talking about) then this little thing opens up your mouth so you can't close and then the junk food comes, you have no choice but to chew and swallow because they machine also pinches your nose. You have no choice!

And which healthy country are you from? There really aren't that many in this world. But mostly, it's cuz Americans are so much on the go, we don't cook for ourselves as much as we should... instead, we grab food at fast food joints, or take out.... all less healthy and larger servings than if we just took the time to cook at home.
