It's a law that everyone must wear seatbelts in a car, why not on a bus? We let a complete stranger drive our children around and they don't even have to wear seatbelts! I find this very disturburbing.

I signed a petition for compulsory seat belts in cars. The government said it was ridiculous and far too expensive. But everybody kept complaining and eventually they gave in.But not until they realised they could fine people for not wearing them.
Since children are not legally responsible, they cannot be fined. If there is no money in it,governments are not interested.

Depending on what state you live in but I live in New york and it is not a law to make a child wear a seatbelt on a bus, but to help ease your mind one of the reasons they are not required to wear seatbelts is because of the compartmentalization of the bus seats. buses are made very very safely ans with nothing but safety in mind and there are tons of rules and regulations a school bus driver has to follow. New york state dept of transpotation puts out a laws ands regulations book and I think most state do the same check with your local DMV and if the situation still bothers you I think it can be made a district policy if you have enough support from parents hope this helps !!

I don't understand that either. The bus may be heavy but the children aren't. I went on a field trip with the kids' preschool class and felt very unsafe. I always wear a seatbelt and I always make the kids wear theirs. My biggest fear is, that if the thing rolls over all the kids are going to get busted up pretty bad.

the law is based on weight, to exlcude mainly contruction vehicles,
some buses don't have them, although even ones that do, no one wears them

keep in mind the seat in front has a high enough back, if anything happens. they;ll hit the seat, which ain't good, but wont eject from car

also, my bus driver once rearended someone doing 45, and instead of stoping suddenly, the car got pushed a good hundred feet, so it isn't a hard stop

Some buses do have seatbelts. My son wears a seatbelt on his bus, but I don't think my daugher has one on her bus.

It will cost the gov. to much money to put two seatbeat on every seat of every school bus in the country.

They actually are supposed to, and when we have school bus drills, they are told to. However, the school that I work in hasn't had one in years. Perhaps you could pose this question to your school board.
