I have a special doggie toothbrush, no luck. AND I know he needs it as his breath stinks!

Hi--this is an addendum to the question, & I'm real serious. I've tried the special toothbrush (seems too large & he fights it), the finger toothbrush (he yanks it off), the CET chews (love them, can eat 10 a day still it's not enough in & of themselves), the greenies. He'll lick the doggie toothpaste any time, but won't let me brush. I get his teeth cleaned by a doggie dentist twice a year & he's had 2 teeth pulled already. He won't let me brush & I'm at my wits end. It's serious as he smells like an abscess, so I know at best there are infected 'pockets.' I'd hate for him to become one of those toothless dogs.

Just rub the stuff on his teeth. Buy some GIANT bones for him to gnaw on and look into antibiotics for a jaw disease.

we hear this all the time at the hospital where i work. you have to start brushing their teeth when they are puppies and even then some times they won't let you. the greenies and the C.E.T. chews are all good but sometimes they just don't work. its something in their make up. i have a small dog and have the same trouble with bad breath and i can do a dental cleaning and it still stinks. we have noticed that dogs that get "Milk Bones" have cleaner teeth.

Here's what I've had to do to brush the teeth of my irish setter, black lab, golden retriever, and german shepard....

First, it's a two-person task. Person #1 needs to straddle the dog rodeo style. Lock your knees so that his shoulders have limited movement. Get a good grip on the lower and top jaws, and pry them apart. Wear gloves if you need to, but keep a good grip. Person #2 needs to wave a treat in front of the dog and then set it down on the floor in eyesight. Then, he/she needs to grab that toothbrush and go to town on those teeth. It's okay if your dog licks the toothpaste...that's why it's meat flavored. Just use more.

Have someone take pictures, too. It looks like a hilarious dog and pony show!

Best of luck!

My dog licks it too, but it still gets the job done even without brushing. I don't even use the brush anymore. I just wash my hands, put a bit on my finger and rub it on her teeth.

Try Greenies dog bone. They help with bad breath. Or you may need to have your dogs teeth cleaned by the vet.

doggie toothbrush is enough, get him to open his mouth and brush brush away. it will take away the plaque. i don't know if meat flavored toothpaste is going to improve his breath.

Use dog toothpaste and dog toothbrush and do it like you do it to yourself. Or you can just give your dog bones that help with plaque.

have you tried one of the brushes that fit onto your finger? they are easier to use and the dog doesn't seem to mind as bad for your finger being in their mouth as they do a brush....

No, don't use regular tooth paste. They sell special tooth paste for dogs.
