A hemorrhoid is essentially a swollen (varicose) vein either right inside or right outside of the anus. These develop due to pressure. Someone can get a hemorrhoid from being constipated, because they have to 'strain' to defecate. Anything that affects the ability to defecate easily (such as age, pregnancy, anal sex, constipation) can make it easier to develop hemorrhoids.

Usually as a direct result of constipation however you can also get them by wiping with coarse tissue, during pregnancy or as a result of anal sex.
