After stripping the boot of the factory coating (rubbing alcohol works, I liked a SUPER fine grade sandpaper), apply a liberal coating of Kiwi. Then melt the wax into the boot. You can use a lighter, but I prefered a candle. Let the boot sit for a while, then brush it off. Repeat this AT LEAST 3 times. After that, cotton and water. I never did get the hang of cotton balls, but a cotton shirt worked great for me.

Lighters are not a good idea. Easy to get burned and the shine cracks and looks like crap after a couple of hours of wear.

Best method that I have found is to strip the factory wax off the boot, use alcohol. If you don't then you will not get a decent shine no matter how hard you try.

Apply a brush shine, the brighter the better. Then using a cotton rag (diapers or old tee shirts work great), cotton ball or similiar cotton material, get it wet with water, saliva, etc. dip fabric into the wax (I have melted the wax in the tin prior to dipping the wet fabric in-it applies a nice even coat to the fabric and it looks pretty good going on), and using small circular motions (about the size of a dime to a quarter) work the wax into the boot. It is pretty slow going at first. Keep the wax up on the rag or you will begin to strip the polish off the boot. There is a fine line between too much and too little polish on the fabric. Keep this up until you get a good glossy shine. Then with a new clean piece of cotton fabric, get some neutral polish and go over the boot again. This is like putting a clear coat on a car and gives the same effect. It is also much easier to maintain.

-Spit Shining a New Boot-
1. Strip the boots with rubbing alcohol. This removes the "factory" wax, and allows the Kiwi wax to penetrate the leather.
2. Apply Kiwi wax to leather. This is usually done with a small brush.
3. Using a slightly damp cotton ball, rub the wax into the boot using small circles with moderate pressure. And be sure to use high-quality cotton, no generic stuff. It will shine, promise.

notes - You'll probably use 40 cotton balls per boot, and spend at least a couple of hours on the first shine. Every other shine will be easier. Some people will suggest using a lighter to melt the wax, but that shine will often crack, and ruin the foundation you spent 2 hours on.

And if you want a truly ridiculous shine, use "Lincoln Wax".

First, start brush shining your boots to get a good coating on them. (apply wax onto boot, then brush off with a shoe brush.)

If you are talking about "spit" shining (where you can see your reflection in the boot, this works for me.

1. Get a 100% cotton rag and wrap it around your index and middle fingers, do not take it off becuase you will need to use the same area.
2. Prepare clean water in a bowl and dip the rag into the water. 3. Dip rag into wax and rub into boot in a circular motion.
4. Keeping rag on fingers, get a lighter and "melt" the wax onto the boot by placing the flame close enough to see the wax gloss up.
5. Once the rag starts to dry out, dip an uncovered finger into the water and "shake" water onto the boot, then keep rubbing.

This should work well, and if it the first time you have done this, after the boot polishes to a high gloss, you may have to dip the rag into water and then polish, and rub until the gloss is deeper, and you can see your reflection. Good Luck

While I was in the Marine Corps, I would apply polish and then use a lighter to melt the polish on the boot. It helps will in all the pores on the leather. But be careful as the lighter tip gets hot and you could burn yourself. This worked for me every time I needed to polish my boots. After that coat just add more polish. It also helps to use a tiny bit of water. It takes the place of spit in the term "spit and shine" your boots. hope this helps.
