as long as it is an official copy of her birth certificate, along with a photo id, she should be good. I just came back from canada last week and I had a photo id and an official copy of my birth certificate. but starting next year, the only thing that will work, will only be a passport.

By the way, the ONLY thing that will work is an official copy of a birth certificate along with photo id (driver's license or state issue id) OR a passport. No other identification will work. This is primarily for getting BACK into the US.

I would say No,( if the copy of the Birth certificate is just a photo copy and not a copy from a court) you would have to have 1 with a stamp on it.You definitly need a passport ...with the way that things are with Terrorists etc...they need proof...and now their talking about scanning ID's to make sure its real and not fake .

Luckily for Americans, we Canadians aren't too anal-retentive at the border. Generally passports are the easiest. Birth certificates are also proof of your American citizenship, which will be helpful for *getting back*.

For your friend with the copy, bring that with driver's licence (with photo), social security card, and anything else that can prove that he/she is an American citizen so that you can all come back.

Enjoy Canada! :) Our drinking age is 18 or 19, depending on where you're going, and our air is higher. :)
