I can't vouch for everyone, but I became an atheist after considering my view on theology carefully. It was an individual task, not relying on what others had written on either side. Since I found it important enough to consider on my own, I think it's interesting to discuss with others. And we don't chat more about God than anyone else. You're just looking at the median of religious types.
By the way, I think a lot of the responses confirm my statement. Look at all the theists here responding to your post defending God, especially the novel that one guy wrote.
Also responding to the atheists as agnostics, I've wondered about that. For me, I consider my self an atheist because I have no theism. I don't believe in God. However, I don't necessarily disbelieve in God. The distinction is a fine point but there nonetheless. I have no evidence that God does not exist, so it wouldn't make sense to rule that out completely, especially since I try to remain impartial and logical. I consider the people who actually believe that God does not exist to be antitheists, ones against theism.
One final note. I think you should only really consider the answers from atheists in this, well the serious ones anyways. If you just listen to your own side, you don't learn. Plus, you'd be hearing them describing us, which to me seems to show bias on two levels.

Okay, just for the record I am an atheist. Atheists mostly talk about God because we can't stand how pathjetic it is for so many people to be dependant on a being that has done nothing for anyone other than a book written by a person a couple thousand years ago and they don't even THINK about the changes that could have been done, they just follow blindly and think that everything will be fine. Well here are some questions for all you christians: If God loves us, why are we so twisted as a race? Why did we (if you believe the story) did Adam and Eve eat the apple, if they were created in th eimage of the flawless God?

These folks are angry at Christians. Atheists don't like rules and don't want to answer to anybody; therefore are at odds with the rules Christians live by because breaking these rules means Christians are not going to approve. Some chat simply because they are still looking for a sign or proof.
Also, they really just like to push Christians buttons, so they can get a Christian angry and act "un-Christian." That gives them an incredible sense of power. These people will be gnashing their teeth in the final days much like the people floating outside Noah's Ark were when they finally figure it out. Ignore them and live in peace.

I wouldn't say obsessed per se. The topic does interest me. I am an atheist. I want to find out more about different view points. This doesn't mean I embrace them.
I think that's because we also want to make our point heard. Until it is, we'll keep on talking/ shouting/ writing.
For example: I have some Christian friends. I know the grounds they stand on, they know mine. While we may not necessarily agree with each other's beliefs, or lack thereof, we respect each other. They know my stance, so why would I repeat it over and over?
Too many stubborn people here, including me.

Hmm, the atheists I know *never* talk about God. I think you're confusing the atheists on these boards with all atheists.
Now, that said, I'd say the reason many of the atheists post on these boards is because you can't ask a question without a dozen 'Because God did it' answers.
It's annoying.

I'm an Atheist, and could actually care less about a higher diety, sich as a God. If a God comes into conversation, I'm not going to back out of hte conversation and ruin it for my friends, just continue conversation as usual.

Not all atheists do, but I think the ones that do may be trying to justify themselves.
Many atheists are really agnostics. They aren't sure, and those will be likely to be obsessed with God.

I talk about God no more and no less then I discuss other things. However religion is very much a part of every culture, I am interested in it the same way I am interested in learning about anything else. It is knowledge, I am interested in learning anything. I view theology the same as I do history, math, science, literature, art and any other subject.

I am an atheist and I am guilty of this.
I do it to make people think. To plant a seed of doubt, to make people take a step into seriously questioning what they have been indoctrinated with. Unfortunately I have only helped 3 people in my life throw off the yoke of religion. But I am only 35 years old so I have plenty of time to continue to help lead people from ignorance.

I have my own opinions on organized religion, but I find that most that don't believe in God or a higher power have asked and NOT received or not seen what they wanted. They have to remember that you will get it, just NOT the way you might have been expecting.
