Very often it is not possible, especially if the dish is complex (with lots of other ingredients). Even in simple dishes it is not always possible. For example, in Austria, "Wiener Schnitzel" is made with either pork or veal, and most cannot tell the difference. Here in San Jose, CA, a restaurant was fined for serving pork in a dish that the menu said was veal. The restaurant was not reported by any patrons, who couldn't tell what it was, but by one of the kitchen employees who knew what was going on. This had gone on for some time before they were caught.

Almost all Kosher foods will have a symbol somewhere on the box/can/package. Usually it is a little letter "K" or "U" with a circle around it (loks like a trademark sign with the letter "R" with a circle around it).

All foods with that mark on the package are Kosher.

I do believe I could tell if it was pork or another meat product. Pork has a distinct flavor and texture.

Pour vodka on it and hold a magnifying glass over the meat. You will see thousands of tiny worms dancing all over the meat, if it is pork.
