For me, the distinction is:

Illegal Immigrant - Someone who migrated here illegally. They want to live here, but snuck in, or stayed past their Visa exp date...

Illegal Alien - Someone who is here but is not trying to immigrate, and is not supposed to be here. (Works in the US, but doesn't live here)

Alien is a term used to describe someone who is, well.. alien to the land. (i.e. In America, anyone who is not American.. Not E.T.) It has nothing to do with dehumanizing anyone. Atleast in my head.

Doesn't someone have to apply for Legal Alien Status in order to immigrate here legally anyways? I dunno...

Pretty broad definitions, but it works for me.

They can be used interchangeably in many cases.

Typically, the term "immigrant" refers to the act of moving from one country to another. The term "alien" describes one who is a noncitizen of the country they are a resident in.

Both terms are correct. Immigrants is often chosen, however, since the person is in the act of immigrating.
