You have got to get one of those automatic liter boxes. I promise, they are wonderful. We have a littermaid we love it. I have also heard of another one that is supposed to be the very best (liter robot), it's a bit more expensive but it uses ordinary trash bags instead of the plastic bins like the littermaid. It's had very good reviews and been featured on some tv shows, like the today show.

I'm thinking of upgrading to one myself.
We would never do without an automatic again.

Like the last person said if you clean out the litter daily or even immediately after your cat poops the smell doesn't remain or do what she is not doing. Simply take the scooper and cover the poop by yourself. However, I must tell you that I have had cats all my life too. About 8 years ago I changed to a Pine litter and other than the initial poop odor, the litter NEVER has any odor and does not create any dust when it is changed. They sell this stuff in a supermarket or a Pet store. One brand is Pine Fresh. It is a little more expensive than the regular clay or scoop able littler but the price is worth every penny. The litter is initially in the form of pine pellets -- you use less by the way -- and then breaks down into a kind of dust but as I said it never smells. Please don't get rid of your kitty for this reason. It would break her heart.

Some cats just don't cover up their waste--I've heard it's a dominance issue; if your male cat hasn't been neutered yet then he may be trying to proclaim his alpha male status by leaving his feces unburied. Of course, some of my neutered males like to leave their sh*t unburied (what's funny is some of the other cats will come along behind them and bury it) so who knows? I'd be a little more concerned about the diarrhea. Give your vet a call ASAP. Lots of things--some easy to fix, some more serious--can cause diarrhea so it's best to establish a cause and work out an appropriate treatment plan. Meanwhile you might try reducing stress, fasting the cat for 24 hours to give his GI tract a rest, and make sure he has access to lots of fresh water so he doesn't get dehydrated. I second Denise and Ro re: gradual diet changes and canned pumpkin. Good advice.

Put the box somewhere where the odor won't bother you. Some cats cover completely, some cats don't. Like people they all have their own personalities.
Maybe you need a tranquilizer darlin'.
Or one of those automatic cat boxes that scoops immediately after the cat's done it's business.

Wish I could answer your question.....but my cat does the same thing! It is so irritating! My cat is 8 years old and about a year ago decided he couldn't be bothered with covering his poop. When he scratches to bury it, he scratches the wall, litterbox, washing machine.....everything but the litter. Recently, he has started peeing on all of our bathmats and throw rugs! Can you believe it? I can understand you wanting to get rid of her.....my own cat just used up the last of his 9 lives when he peed on my new area rug 30 minutes after I bought it home from the store!!!!!!
Hopefully someone on this site can solve your problem....I'll be watching the posts myself to see what their advice is.

if you scoop it and all of that, i dont see why there is so much odor, get one of the litter boxes with a cover. like a little house, and some have a place for a deodorizer or something. use baking soda in the litter. try having six cats at one time.

There was this wonderful invention that I saw on an informercial once... a self-cleaning litter box. Just type that into the search. One brand is called "LitterMaid". Whoah, that looks like a printer. Starts at $125 at Amazon.
Or, try www.petsmart.com.
Why have the cat try to clean it when the box can do it? :)

They do this if they feel they're in controll of the household. (dominant behavior) They will only quit, if they end up at the bottom of the ranking system that all cats have.

This may sound stupid, but the next time she is in the box..go there, and when she is finished, use the little scoop to cover the poop, show her, do it a few times until she gets the drift..
