I am an RN and am orienting a graduate nurse. I wanted to see if its legal for a GN to give blood products if its verified by an RN and the RN assists in the administration and monitoring of the patient while they get the blood. Or does it vary between facilities? Any other nurses, doctors or health care professionals out there have any suggestions? I was never oriented to orient another nurse and my GN doesn't have a list of "to do's" and "not to do's".

You need to check the policy and procedures at your facility, it varies at each hospital and I believe from state-to-state.

If you ever have a question ask your nurse manager, mentor (if you have one) and ultimately the good old policy/procedures manual or standards of care/standards of practice for your unit.

If you are there for a JCAHO survey they will ask you questions like this and if you don't *know* your policies and standards of care, you at least must know where they can be found.

I strongly experience that new grads ought to get a minimum of 6 months to a year minimum of journey in a popular scientific / surgical unit in the previous specializing and stepping right into a serious care environment. that's annoying adequate being a clean graduate and discovering the thank you to function, yet including the stress of a serious care environment provides an entire different measurement of tension to an already stressful time. The journey you will get carry of from the massive decision of sufferers and their circumstances and coverings should assist you to in countless techniques. you will learn an corporation beginning up in assessment. you will learn the common protocols and concepts for functioning as an RN in an acute care facility. you would be waiting to strengthen your expert skills in a miles less-intimidating environment. Many hospitals do no longer hire new grads into ICUs. some could. in the event that they're keen, and in case you're somewhat valuable and are up for the undertaking, then i assume decide for it. you already know your self maximum suitable. stable success!
