Actually when people die; they're asleep in the grave. Death is called a sleep (Matt.9:24; John 11:11; 1Cor.15:51; 1Thess.5:10).
The spirit goes back to God that gave it!(Eccles.12:7; Psalm 146:4)

So to answer your question; you're in the (first death)grave until the resurrection(1Thess.4:13-17).
1st Resurrection: The saints and Jesus will be teaching others the true message of God on earth(Zech.14:9,11,16-19; Rev.5:10; 20:4-6; Isaiah 62:7) the 1,ooo years; the saints will be ruling over cities.

Then the one's that don't obey will be killed - 2nd death(Isaiah 65:12,20; 66:17); these are the one's that will be in the second resurrection. So everyone is going to (Isaiah 66:19)hear the true message of God--so noone will be without excuse.

What they do with it is up to them. God doesn't want anyone to perish(2Pet.3:9); he wants them to come to repentance. Then after this the judgement(Rev.20:11-15) and the New Jerusalem coming out of heaven(Rev.21 and Rev.22)

The Bible describes three hells.

SHEOL OR HADES, THE FIRST HELL
The first term in Greek and Hebrew means the grave. It's the grave where the dead await the resurrection.

TARTAROO, THE THIRD HELL
This third term is only used once and refers to the place of restraint where the demon spirits were placed following the rebellion against God.

THE THREE HEAVENS
There's 3 heavens.

First Heaven = This is also called the firmament or expanse of heaven. It is the heaven where the birds fly and where the clouds give rain. (Gen.1:26; 2:20; 8:2 & 1Kings 18:45)

Second Heaven = This refers to outerspace where the sun, moon and stars can be found. (Gen.22:17 & Exodus 32:13 & Joshua 10:13)

Third Heaven = The Apostle Paul tells us that the heaven of God's abode is the "third heaven." In the Old Testament this is often designated by the phrase "the heaven of heavens." (Joshua 2:11 & Psalms 11:4 & 2Corinthians 12:2 equated with v.4 = paradise)

THERE ARE TWO KINGDOMS: ONE ON EARTH AND THE OTHER ONE COMING DOWN FROM HEAVEN.

The 1st Kingdom of Heaven =

You know because I can't deny the historical fact that Jesus rose from the dead I believe Him when He says that there is a heaven and hell. He spoke more about hell. He described it as a place were the worm does not die and is a lake of fire prepared for the devil and his angles and is forever. He also describes heaven as His fathers house with many rooms.
The streets are paved with gold and there are no more tears. This place is prepared for those who believe in Him. The apostle John said that God loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him will have everlasting life and be in heaven. John 3"16 Please believe in Jesus, believe that He died for your sins and rose again from the dead and you will someday walk the streets of gold. I would love to see you there.

For the unsaved, death brings to an end the chance to accept God’s gracious offer of salvation. “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

For the saved, death ushers us into the presence of Christ. “To be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23).

Well if you are a believer in Christ and have become a born again Christian you will go to Heaven. If not then unfornately you will go to hell. Course God doesn't want anyone to go to hell, that's why he sent his son to die on the cross for our sins. It was Christ who trumiphed over death. If you have asked Christ to come into your heart do not fear death, for it is actually only the begining. What a reunion that will be. Dying when you are a Christian is only a see you later not a good bye.
