Some people have up to 100. It all depends on your credit score and history. I know certain banks have limits like CitiGroup and JP Morgan Chase which WILL NOT lend you anymore credit if you have certain amount of open accounts.

Also, if you have reach the perfect 820 score and you pay all your balances in full each month, you will be deny if you apply for more new credit. They also have limits on how many credit cards issued by them you're allow to have.

as others have said you can have as many cards as you can get, however, be careful not to over extend your credit. This is bad because every card you own and the limit on each is sent to credit reporting agencies. Say if you have 10 cards with over 100thousand avail credit and you only earn 20 a year then you apply for a mortgage to get a new home even tho you may owe nothing there is a good chance they will turn you down.

Well since each new card takes a hit on your credit rating, you'll find that the more you have, the harder each new one will be to get and the terms will start getting worse.
So each new offer now comes with harder criteria and much higher interest rates.
If you get too many cards, you'll have too much outstanding ability to get credit and your credit rating will drop so dramatically, you won't qualify for any new credit....except maybe from less than honest brokers.

as many as you want . just be careful not to overextend yourself or your debts will accrue and your credit rating goes down the drain once you're not able to pay. Also beware the interest rates for those credit cards and late payment fees are horrendous.
for your own peace of mind one card should be sufficient. altho' this is the american way charge, charge and buy on credit to boost the economy.

Dozens but the question is why. You are setting yourself up for credit problems, will get tons of junk mail and have to fish through lots of statements every month. Get three or four.
