the swellings appear almost in an instant and take between 6-8 hours to disappear again, my hands also get really hot and itchy when they swell, ive considered that it might be an allergic reaction which would be the obvious answer but i haven't changed anything in my diet or washing powder or anything like that....... genuine answers only please

What a coincidence. I have similar problem, mine are combined with red spots which become very itchy and swell instantaneously and remain for several hrs and slowly subside.

My family doc. said it could be high esoniphile content and upon using medication for 3 wks there was no response. However, I have been taking Allegra and I seem to respond to it as the flare ups are no longer acute. That's not say that it is completely cured. For the last couple of days these swellings came back although moderately but that may be because I stopped Allegra.

I have yet to consult a specialist (dermatologist may be...) and find out the root cause. Sorry there is no easy answer but hope my answer gives you a bit more insight into this problem.

P.S. Thanks for a genuine answer to my question re: my daughter's bed-wetting problem. Your suggestions and also chiding of those who give stupid answers touched me dearly.

It does sound like an allergy of some sort, allergies that you never had before could come on at any time, go to a doc and explain to them in detail what is happening. Maybe start noting what you were doing or where you were when the swelling happens also

It could be a reaction to pollen, even if it hasn't bothered you before. If it's around your mouth maybe you have a plant at home that's causing it . I've been bothered by something similar this summer and there's a garden outside with highly scented flowers and it's the only thing i've came up with so far...maybe you've touched something and then put your hands up to you face....i've been taking piriton and it does help a bit...hope you get some help ....

It could be an allergic reaction. Look around on the out-side of your house.Maybe it is a plant with flowers now in bloom. If it is so, every time these flowers blossom each year you will have this reaction. There are so many sources of allergic reactions.

my mom is also goin thru the same phase. shes had red marks all over her body. the docs have given her a dose (injection) of steroid and avil (anti-allergic) which does help her for sometime but after few hrs the story is the same. the rashes itch like anything and they seem to develop at new places everyday! we have still not identified what is causing all these allergies.

Sounds almost like Angioedema.
Though it could be another autoimmune disease.
My suggestion is to go see either your family doc, and have some basic labs done, or a rhuematologist/endocrinologist to figure out what is triggering these swellings.
Have you been put on any new drugs lately?

I have them and I put it down to an allergy, something in the food I have eaten shortly before the swellings.

Allergies or stress. If it continues for a couple of days, see a doctor.
