MythTV is a GPL open source application for Linux designed to allow any computer (that meets the specified minimum requirements) to function as a digital video recorder and a digital home entertainment system.

Features

Among MythTV's features are:

* The separate "Frontend/Backend" architecture which allows multiple machines to remotely serve content from a single server.
* The ability to analyze recorded shows for commercials and give users the option of skipping commercials during playback
* The ability to watch recordings at an accelerated/decelerated rate, adjusting the audio pitch as necessary.
* The ability to intelligently schedule recordings and avoid conflicts as needed.
* The availability of free guide data for TV listings (in the United States and Canada, thanks to a gracious third-party vendor Zap2it Labs), as well as support for XMLTV listings in most other countries.
* The ability to pause, skip, and rewind live TV
* The ability to schedule, administer, or list many functions of the system via web-based interface
* Support for both ATSC and DVB high-definition television.

Windows

Microsoft Windows has several free DVR applications including GB-PVR, Got All Media and MediaPortal. DScaler has also DVR support in works.

There also are several proprietary applications including SageTV, SnapStream Beyond TV, ChrisTV, Showshifter, Meedio (now a dead product - Yahoo! bought most of the company's technology and discontinued the Meedio line, and rebranding the software Yahoo! Go - TV, which is now a free product), InterVideo WinDVR, Recordit Plus and the R5000-HD.

There is also a separate version of Microsoft Windows called Windows XP Media Center Edition which has DVR capabilities.

And Microsoft Windows Vista will include in its standard version the Media Center functionalities.
