I bought a car months ago, but later I found an odometer rollback record on the title :-( It's not a big deal, I thought, but when I was trying to sell it, I found it's a real big problem!

Does anyone knows what laws did the former seller break?

Thanks a lot!

Motor Vehicle Cost Information Act, 49 U.S.C. Section 32704

You probably still have a legal claim against the person or dealer that sold you the car. At the very least you should contact your DMV with proof. They may be able to assist you in getting relief from the seller.

I suspect different states have different laws pertaining to odometer rollback. if you can prove the previous owner "turned back the clock" for financial gain - he is at least guilty of fraudulent misrepresention of the product. in Maine, it is illegal to change an odometer reading for any reason - and if the odometer/speedometer is replaced, the original milage at the time of replacement must be noted in a door jam sticker or the original milage must be listed on the title as "unknown." FYI: Including "AS IS" on the bill of sale will not release the seller from any liability if he knowingly sold the car with a false odom reading.

A variety of federal laws were broken -- enough to reserve a room at hotel gray for about three years.

Fraud. Could be jail time if it could be proven it was done intentionally (probably was) and repeatedly.
