There are about 35 processes running. Where can I find a list of those tasks required to operate Windows XP and be connected via DSL?

With NO programs running except the DSL network and XP it seems 35 processes is excessive.

Thank You in advance.

There are some sites that you can search the process and it tells you why it's there. Google for them

Thirty five processes is not excessive. I currently have about 65 processes running. I am using XPpro.

Programs do not have to be actively running to show up as active processes. Things like Anti-virus programs, pop-up blockers, etc., all run in the background. That is transparent to the user.

If you open task-manager, chose the processes tab, and click twice on CPU, the processes are arranged by CPU use. Thus you can watch to see what is actually active. What you will most likely see is that system idle processes "uses" 96-99 percent of the CPU, and all the others pop in at 1 to 2 percent. Although for fun, try loading Word or some other program. and watch the CPU usage change as the program is loaded.

TO find out what they all mean, open an advanced google window, and type in the 'Image Name', perform the search. Read the results.

Good luck

I can't answer the question you asked, but I can tell you that when I need to know what a process is, googling it generally gives me an answer. You might also try posting a list of the running processes at

Most of the people who post there know what they're talking about.

When your computer is first turned on, press F8 and start in safe mode with network support. Safe mode runs a minimum of processes and you can see how many are really necessary or even do a print screen to save it for comparison with normal boot mode.

um... if you have 35 things running in task manager with no programs open, like IE or yim then you got some serious spyware issues or something.. close them all and see what happens!
