When will I get used to wearing them? They are very uncomfortable and I feel like I lost the taste of food.

It feels as if I have plastic in my mouth and I am trying to chew with it.

Practice, practice, practice. It takes time. If you sat down at a piano for the first time, you would not be playing classical music in a day. While I can not comment on the quality of your dentures, I can only hope that they are "just right" and that this is a matter of getting used to dentures.

Dentures are not a replacement for teeth. They are simply better than not HAVING teeth. They do take some patience on your part. You will have to start out with chewing smaller bites and trying to distribute the food a little to the left and a little to the right at the same time. You HAVE lost the taste of your food, because you have a lot of insulation in your mouth now. You probably taste half denture and half food. After a while, your sense of taste will return somewhat, but that too is an adjustment on your part.

I know that this is not very encouraging, but thousands of new denture wearers make the adjustments. If it takes a month or two, you will look back in a few years and say that it was hardly any time at all. It's just difficult to accept that while you are learning to use dentures for the first time.

Hi there,
Getting use to dentures does take time cause let's face it, our mouth was made for teeth not large bits of plastic. Do you have them fitting correctly yet? That could take another couple of visits. You can also try some of the adhesives, just a drop though at first til you get the feel of it. Helps to keep them in place so you don't clatter when you talk and it helps when eating. Warm fluids loosens it too quickly I have found. You could also try the pads they have. I have found that if I cut the size down to about half they are less bulky. Or you could use the adhesives on your uppers and the pads on your lowers.
As far as losing your taste, you might find that there is a film building up on your tongue due to eating softer, less rough foods. If you try using a tongue brush with a little toothpaste and gently scrub you tongue you might bring your taste buds back to life.
Well, hope this helps,
Linda O

I don't have dentures, but sense you do I will tell you that you ARE chewing with plastic in your mouth and it's probably not the most comfortable thing. So if you're not used to them then ofcourse that's all you're going to think about while you are trying to eat, hence lack of taste. You should get used to them soon and if you don't go back and get them adjusted.

it will take a month or a little longer and if they are uncomfortable , are they rubbing on you gums? if so go back to the dentist and he can sand them down to make it more comfortable, as far as taste that should not be happening and you need to call them, has to do with your sinuses and taste and needs to be addressed

they will get comfortable shortly. Best thing I ever did and that was 25 yrs ago. If you are having trouble don't be afraid to have them relined (refitted). They should be nice and tight and not loose at all. I have bwwn lucky because all of mine have fit perfectly and I have never had to use paste to hold them in. I ate a steak the first night I had them. Relax and enjoy them

I was told to expect things to change off and on for the first year while you jaw is healing, also depends on how often you wear them. I am still unable to eat with mine.

Refer back to your dentist, because this is something which is abnormal. Do know that you need to taste you food to eat it.

Ask your dentist if you have lost the sense of taste...that is not good!
