If not, then what was the difference?

Nope, Buster, California didn't fall into the ocean last night. It was only a 4.7 quake. Just swayed back & forth a bit, but no hippies were lost & nobody saw Jesus.

Let's see...hippies believe in peace, love, and freedom, and they like to camp*. Jesus taught peace**, love, and freedom, and he camped all the time. Yes, I think he was a lot like a hippie.

(*I mean tent camping, not that foo-foo RV crap.)

(**Jesus did say, "I came not to bring peace, but a sword." He was talking about his teaching*** dividing people****, though.)

(***I mean his real teaching, not the watered-down and muddied version we have today.)

(****I mean the people who really got his message of love, peace, and freedom--not Bible-thumping***** people.)

(*****No offense, if you're part of that group.)

:)

No. Tempting. But I don't think Jesus was a hippie. Jesus was not rebellious. He was an internal reformer. He didn't turn on and drop out. But he did tune in and try to make a positive, loving difference in the world around him.

Many people think of him as a kind of "rambling" hippie. Nothing could be further from the truth. He was more like an itinerate preacher. He never missed going to the synagogue (i.e. church) on the Sabbath. He was submissive to his parents and the authorities around him. He didn't just go off and do what ever he wanted. He was always about "his father's business" even from his youth (see the Gospel of John, chapter 2

He may not have been a hippie but I think he loved hippies and party animals. He hung out with what the religious world of his time considered "sinners" to the extent that he was labeled a "wine bibber and a glutton" (i.e. "party animal" guilty by association.).

One thing he was that was "hippie" like, and this is something that many of his followers miss out on was . . . he was "laid back". He showed great patience and and forbearance with his disciples. He was comassionate and understanding toward "sinners" and readily imparted forgiveness to them. He was never stressed out of or short with anyone, even with those who tortured him and abused him. He was more than "beautiful people." He was and is the Beautiful One.

Sincerely,

A Flower Child of the late 60's

Glad Cal didn't fall in the ocean last night.

I'd say yes to the question but give the points to Baxter. I can't top that. I can turn dandelions to wine though.

He was a rebel. He was so different that thousands of people followed Him through an arid climate to hear Him speak. Then He fed them. He was eventually killed because of the massive power He had over the public.

He definitely had a lot more in common with Hippies than He did hypocrites or Pharisees.

I think so. If Jesus were alive today he'd be a liberal.
