Actually it's not a stupid question. Have you seen some of the questions posted?
I have three children myself and I have been wondering the same thing for quite some time now. I wouldn't mind if my children called me by my given birth name. Mom is so generic. It doesn't distinguish me from any other woman who's child calls her mom or mum.
Lately I have found myself referring to the woman that gave birth to me by her first name. I still call her mom when I speak with her, out of habit. But whenever I talk about her, and I do, I always mention her by her first name. However, I have been losing a lot of respect for her lately.
Maybe it's just that, a form of respect for the people that gave you life. I don't really know.

Maybe you should asked an articulate question for an articulate answer. In an attempt to answer anyway, I believe respect is the reason, although 'mother and father' have been diluted to mom and dad in these modern times.

We must respect them by all means. Its not an easy task to hold a baby about 10 months and feed and look after him when he or she is infant. mom and dad are doing a great job that cannot be compared to anything at all. So we must respect and pay back the debt.

We use Mom & Dad because when very small words like Mother and Fatrher are difficult, also a small baby says dada and mama as the first and easiest words, so parents from the distant past used these to give recognition as to who the child was talking to.

I think I call my mom "mom" and my dad "dad" because its so much more personal. Its like saying, this is the person who raised me to be who I am, who help me in her tummy for 9 months and made me the person I am today...and I am proud of it, and I honor you the only way I know how, by telling whoever listens you are my MOTHER"
...thats the best I can come up with

It's out of respect. That's why you have to call your teachers Mr or Mrs So and So.

It's natural and yes there are lots of parents who say that's right son or my sweet daughter what do you need or daddy's little girl.

'mu' and 'da' are some of the first syllables that a child says, thus devoted parents centuries ago took them for their own and created names for themselves that their children could say early on. They stuck.

It originates as a mark of respect, although it's probably more tradition and habit now.
