My PC came with Norton's AVS.
One of the first thugs I did after going online was removing Norton and installing AVG Free.
Now that I'm using DSL, the auto-updates are FAST. If you're on dialup, the updates take longer - but do update regularly.
Make certain you have one (1) system antivirus. I wiped Norton from the add/remove software control panel, but it seemed to take forever for my PC to start.
I talked to a tech friend, and she suspected that it might still be on my PC. I followed her instructions, & there it was.
Go to Start >> Run. In the box that pops up, type MSCONFIG and click on the 'start-up' tab.
Everything has an X in the checkbox, no? Drill down til you get to one that has 'norton' as part of a file name. Remove the X, exit MSCONFIG and restart your PC.
When it finishes rebooting, you'll probablly get a WARNING. This one you can ignore - click "don't shw me this again".

Norton Anti-virus is not the only 1. I am using McAfee for 3.5 yrs. I try Norton for 1 yr only. I found that every types of anti-virus softwares r almost the same, the importance is up-date ur software regularly, for me......once per month. As long as ur anti-virus is up to date plus other protection(anti spam, anti spy.....). I think ur computer r save.

There are several anti-virus software. You don't have to use Norton.
I think you should try scan virus online if you have good internet connection:

You can get AVG Free. It's an excellent program. I've never had an issue with it and when I downloaded it, it caught viruses that McAfee had missed.

There are many out there:

Firewalls are also useful:
