During the days of Vaudville, comics, singers, dancers, burlesque shows could play any number of cities along the East Coast to Chicago: Boston, New Haven, the Catskills, Buffalo, Cleveland, Philadelphia, PIttsburg, Detroit, Baltimore, etc. The best place to play, which meant the top performers, was New York City, so it was called the Big Apple, because that was the place of most opportunity. If someone could perform in NYC, they could perform anywhere.

I don't know... but I DO know that it's not just Manhattan... its NYC in its entirety that is referred to as "The Big Apple".

Personally, I stay as far away from there as possible. Too many people for me! lol
