As long as it takes for the exposed bone to heal, the reason a dry socket hurts is since there is no clot there to cover the bone that is exposed from the extraction, exposed bone hurts...... it could take 2 weeks it just depends on how fast things heal. Sorry.....they are miserable I had one myself. There could be infection but if you have been seeing a dentist to have it packed, he would have been able to tell if there was something else going on.

A week is a long time, but if there is no redness, swelling or pus discharge, then its likely not infected. I had to take a narcotic pain reliever with my dry socket, and it pretty much knocked me out all weekend but then it was bearable by the third day. I would call your dentist again. I'm not a dentist but I'm wondering if re-packing may be the problem, as you would tend to irritate the tissue each time you pull out the packing.

I got all 4 wisdom teeth extracted 10 days ago. First and second day was CAKE, barely any pain. The third day I thought I was going to die from pain. I called my surgeon right away and he packed it, Felt better for about 12 hours. Then every single night I would wake up outta my sleep crying in pain! So in one week I went to him 3 times to pack the holes (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) After 10 days of this EXCRUCIATING pain, my holes are still huge (I still have to eat soft food) which I have lost 6 pounds in 1 week. (Good? But not worth the pain!) I still wake up in the middle of the night crying in pain. So I have taken initiative and yesterday I went and bought me some Eugenol (clove oil) and decided to rub it back there. The pain will go away for about 2 hours and then come screaming back. No, pain meds dont work either. :( Still hoping for a solution or to find out when all of this will end....... :(

rry socket is a painful condition ,so it can be treated by
(1)antibiotics
(2)analgesics
(3)mouth wash
(4)dentist must irrigate the socket day after day with saline and put alveogel as a septic gel and pain relief.
the condition may last for 7-10 days.

Doesn't the packing take the pain away? I had mine packed twice and once the doctor put the clove tasting black junk in the hole the pain went away. I just had to be careful not to knock it back out of the hole. I am so sorry your still hurting so bad.
Call them right away. Maybe you need a strong antibiotic or something. There is no need to suffer this way.

until it starts to heal over a little bit. i had it and it lasted a little while, it's just that the nerves are exposed to the air since the blood clots are staying put.
