Of course you can, you will need an amp as well. To hook up an amp to your Stock CD player you are going to need a Line Leveler Converter, it will convert the wires to RCA outputs. I would not hook up the sub directly to the CD player, its not because you will damage the sub, you run the risk of damageing the CD player before the sub, and it really wouldnt make too much sound, or bass with the small output of the stock CD player. The guy above me is a joke "overpowering" a 500watt sub with a stock deck? wow, I cant stop laughing. If the sub is 500 RMS, get an amp that is as close, but not going over in watts. If possible get a 500 RMS amp if you have enough money in your budget (not saying they are expensive) If it is a 500 watt MAX, I would only put about 200-250 watts, but REAL speaker companys dont rate MAX watts as their main measurement, RMS is the way to base the watts at.

WOW! The misinformation in this thread is amazing. You will not destroy your sub running it off your stock radio. You will however not be playing it to it's full potential. If the speaker has a sensitivity rating of 80. It will put out 92 dB's at 16 watts. A 100 watt amp, only averages about 10 watts due to the crest factor of music. Your equipment is very rarely working at maximum capacity. The only time it will is listening to test tones.
All that being said, I definitely recommend an amplifier.
Spencer, I told you how to put it in in your question. They are not a pain at all. Buy some T-taps, hook them up to your speaker wires, run wire from the t-taps to the converter, then run RCA's from the converter to your amp. How much more difficult can it be?

Sure. You can hook it up to the stock stereo. However, you will not get good sound off of it. Sure. You'll get a little bit of bass, but not its full potential without an amplifier.
Most stereos have an internal amp, but not too powerful.

I wouldn't recommend it. You may end up ruining your sub. Most speakers are destroyed by too much power, its distortion. Or overdriving your speakers. I would get an amp rated at 250w to 300w continous. That should work just fine.

you will need an amp and if you dont have an aftermarket raido head then you will need a hi-low converter too... and that is a real pain to put in... and really expensive sometimes too...

you can, but you will barely hear it. To be able to hear it you must have it in a box and a matching amplifier.
