I met him in San Francisco...I am Buddhist though I am a white American living in China. He is urbane and good humored, his voice sounds squeaky to me but his English is quite good...( I had even learned some phrases of Tibetan to greet him...but I didn't have the chance to use them). I gave him an enlarged photo of the Potala Palace where he used to rule and another of a Xigase monastery. He is an intelligent person and very knowledgeable in worldly affairs.

Yes, I've seen the Dalai Lama in person a couple of years ago, when he visited Toronto Ontario. I was at a convention right by the hotel he was staying at, so after it was finished, I popped over there to see if I could see him.

When he returned, I called out 'hi' to him, & he turned around & smiled & waved at me.

It was a pretty cool experience, alright. However, as a Catholic, I much preferred when I got to see Pope John Paul II a couple years before seeing the Dalai Lama, when the Pope was in Toronto. I went up to the Convent where he was staying, just before he was heading off to Mexico, & he came up in a golf cart to the gates, to see all the people who came. I was only a few inches away from him.

For me, that was a much greater experience.:-)

I haven't met or seen him in person, but I've read his "Ethics for the New Millenium," and despite being an atheist I admire not only the Buddhism but the Dalai Lama in particular. He's a truly great man.

Although deeply spiritual, he is still a man. Just a man. A mere mortal. Just another of God's creatures. But he doesn't molest little boys like priests do.
