I groom dogs, and I cannot fathom why people own cocker spaniels. I would sooner take on the biggest pit, or rottie, or mastiff, even if it was growling at me with it's hackles up, then go near a cocker spaniel. On my list of dogs that bite me during grooming, cockers are at the top (followed closely by toy poodles). I don't think any of the larger breed have ever given me a serious bite- it's always the little ones.

I really think an aggressive dog depends on the owner. I think any dog can be aggressive if that's how they were raised, intentionally or unintentionally. I'm in college to become a vet, and our family friends have had a cocker spaniel ever since my friend was a little girl and she is a very nice dog. On the other hand, I've known cockers that weren't so nice. Same thing with pit bulls, I've known some very nice, sweet pit bulls, and some very aggressive pit bulls.

I am agreeing with most of the other people on here, but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents. I worked at a vet clinic for a couple of years and the bad cockers far outweighed the bad pits. We rarely had to muzzle pits, but we had to on almost every cocker. We even had a cocker spaniel rescue group come in from time to time, and I could not imagine those dogs ever finding good homes. We did see SOME nice cockers, but they were few and far between. The little dogs will trick ya, you think they are cute and innocent but they will bite much quicker than a large dog will.

As a cocker spaniel owner and a cocker spaniel rescue worker I have to disagree...
Yes, some cocker spaniels can be snappy with small children, or strangers, but for the most part they are wonderful dogs with a "merry disposition" as the AKC puts it. They tend to have behavioural problems when they are poorly bred (which is a real problem with all of the puppy mills and back yard breeders), or have not been properly socialised. My personal cocker is wonderful with my family, his vet, and my close friends, cats, and other dogs, but wants nothing to do with strangers.
As someone who works full time at an animal shelter -- yes I do that too. I can tell you that most pit bulls are very people friendly loving dogs... BUT not so friendly when it comes to other animals... I am not saying all pit bulls are aggressive towards other animals, but that seems to be a major issue with them.

I have no experience with Pit Bulls, but do currently own 2 cocker Spaniels and also have a toddler. My parents also owned cockers when I was younger. My cockers are wonderful with my little one and also with my niece who is 2. I have personally never had any negative experience with one. My cockers are around children all day long (approx 7 children ranging from 18months to 6yrs) and they adore being with the children.
All breds will end up with some being aggressive. Doesn't matter what it is.
I personnally like cockers and would never trade mine for anything!!

I agree I am a vet tech and extremly dislike most cocker spaniels because of there biting problems. I've seen one go for it's owners face. Delt with more cocker then pits but the 5 or so I have worked with were great.

I work at an animal hospital. I'm a vet tech (RVT) and this is the Gods honest truth I will not touch a cocker spaniel with out putting a muzzle on it first.they are just mean dogs . rarely do we see a mean pitt. yes they can bite and do sometimes ,but with them they will give you warning , watch the body language, but with cockers you can't tell they have the sweetest faces and they are wiggling that nub of a tail and they suck you right in and before you know what has happened you have just gotten bit. 7 out of 10 cockers are very bad biters. they are not kids dogs at all

Actually I would have thought a Chihuahua was but I can buy into the cocker since my grandpa had one and he bit us all the time. I own a Pit, the Chihuahua I have is ten times more aggressive and is more incline to attack or bite someone. It is a good thing she is little, my poor boy Pit gets all the blame becuz of his looks. Biggest baby in the world.

I'm a dog trainer and I have been bitten by several Cocker Spaniels, never by a pit. Cockers have been overbred for years and are no longer sane dogs.
