I'd have to look up the date but I would say it's the same as the first evidence that man had religion - in other words, as soon as man had enough self-consciousness to wonder how the world around him worked and what his place was in the world. I would guess that polytheism was more popular earlier on because there were SO many natural phenomena that man couldn't explain, he needed a lot of deities to fill in the gaps! =)

I'm pretty sure it predates written record, but the first historical record would probably be Sumeria, with Enlil and Enki.

I think Peter Schilling put it best in "Error in the System"

polytheism and pagan worship has been around since people made up gods so there really is no date available

Well they worshipped like a gazillion different Gods in ancient Egypt. And if I remember correctly, when Rachel and Jacob move away from her father she steals her father's many idol gods.
