"Fore" is another word for "ahead" (think of a ship's fore and aft). Yelling "fore" is simply a shorter way to yell "watch out ahead" (or "watch out before"). It allows golfers to be forewarned, in other words.
The British Golf Museum cites an 1881 reference to "fore" in a golf book, establishing that the term was already in use at that early date (the USGA suggests the term may have been in use as early as the 1700s).

It is recognized by all as the proper warning. If you yell something else, most won't understand that you are giving warning about an errant shot.

shortened version of "before you" which usually means it's behind you but ahead of the hitter. If your in a fairway and a ball comes into you, you can hit it back and/or kick the shite out of the jaginthebag who hit it.
from the scots.

It is the trad word that has ben used since gold began. It comes from the word "before" and it's like saying "Hey, you guys in front of me, look before (hey, its' old English...they spoke differently back then)...uh, me and you, the ball's headed your way."
