I am 7 months pregnant and everyone I see teases me and aks if I am having twins. My doctor once listened to the baby's heartbeat alot longer than usual, left me and hubby raising our our eyebrows in curiosity but never asked what's going on. During my 2nd trimester I had a sore tailbone the entire time. My ultrasound revealed one baby reaching up like they normally do, but there was a dip at the top. My doc said it was a muscle wall. Does this sound like there could be two, or is this all normal speculation?

I've heard stories of a hidden twin that came out at birth. I think people say that because I have a small frame and I'm all stomache. My cheerleader washboard is a beach ball now.

Firstly, your scan sounds completely normal and it is unlikely that you are having twins. I've had twins and then 2 singleton pregnancies, and your scan sounds just like the ones I've had with each of my single pregnancies. The sore tailbone is just one of those glamourous pregnancy things. Because of all the hormones pumping around your system, things are loosening up and it is likely that there is a lot of movement in your tailbone that shouldn't be happening. The extra weight of pregnancy doesn't help it either.

OK, now I have said that, in this day and age it is rare for twins not to be discovered until late in a pregnancy but it is NOT unknown for this to happen. In my own twin pregnancy, we had a scan at about 8 weeks that showed only 1 baby. We didn't have another scan until 18 and a half weeks. I kept joking about it being twins, but my obstetrician only picked up one heart beat. I had dreams about it being twins too, but everyone told me I was crazy. Then we had that 2nd scan. Lucky I was horizontal already! We were looking at "the" baby sucking its thumb and kicking, and I commented that I'd felt the baby move, but seeing it was really amazing. The doctor doing the scan leaned over and said "You do know there's more than one in there, don't you?" It was like being told I was pregnant again.

Then not long after I found out my news, my friend told me of an amazing thing that had happend to the mother of one of the children she teaches. The mother had gone to full term and was in labour when the hospital staff asked her to prepare for an epidural. She said she didn't need one, but then they said it was standard practice with twins. "Twins?" she said. "I'm not having twins." But she was. They had located two heartbeats when they were doing their admission checks and had just assumed (as you would) that she knew.

So, both of these cases are rare, but they do happen. It is not likely that you have twins, but it is not impossible that you have them. If you are really concerned, you should arrange for another scan. At this stage it would be very difficult to miss them, but not impossible, particularly if your scan was fairly early.

Enjoy your pregnancy and good luck with everything.

they (the dr.'s) may not hear the second heart beat....
my sister had twins in december....she is always a size or to 3. and this was her third pregnancy. she was huge!!
but for monthd the dr.s said everything was fine and that THE baby would grow to be health. Then she took some test (not sure what all the test are..never had kids before) and it came back saying something was wrong.
her doctor told her not to worry but to come in the next a.m. of course she spent all night in pure agony and on the phone with me (i live 1100 miles away).
but the next day she went in and took an ultrasound (which was like the third one during that pregnancy) and discovered that she was pregnant with a boy and girl.
they had an explanation for the fact that they hadn't noticed the other one..but i can not rememeber it.
so, basically, yes you could have twins.
do they run in your family or your husbands?
whether or not you do...good luck and congrats!
oh, her twins are so beautiful! one boy and one girl.
but, i have to say, if you do have twins...get as much sleep now as you possibly can. like i said, this was her third pregnancy..so she has had experiance with newborns and neither or them can compare to the work she and her husband puts in now...
it's worth it, though...it truelly is.

the doctor would tell you if you were having twins and when i had my twins i had to go to the doctor more often than if you were carrying one baby...and the ultrasound would tell if you was having twins...if there was any need for concern i think they would tell you...but i admit i had twins but they both died at birth.. they drowned in their own fluid...but there was something wrong with one of the twins i was told ...they did not let me see them and they did not let me go to their funeral....but i had lost a child less than a year before to crib death....so i was not doing to well emotonally...they take more tests now and i am sure they are more careful now so i would not worry at all if i were you...

I would hope your Dr. would tell you if he even thought you might be having twins!! Do twins run in your family? Did you use fertility drugs or anything else to make you think you might be having twins? Kill the curiosity and ask your Dr. GOOD LUCK!
