I don't know the story behind the reasoning but I do know that most don't throw rice anymore. They throw bird seed. Evidently the rice was swelling up in birds throats and causing them to suffocate. Not a nice image in the wedding photos.

This tradition has been brought down through the ages as a wish given by the guests in a wedding ceremony to the newly-wed couple upon their exit from the church which signifies a prosperous union because rice represents prosperity.

The rice is thrown while the the newly-weds have reached the facade of the church and are about to ride their bridal car. The throwing of rice which comes from the air unto the heads of the couple signifies plenty coming from God.

Here, in the Philippines, throwing of rice during a wedding celebration is still being observed but not all the time. Others replace rice with rose petals which they say also represent prosperity but personally, I believe that we should stick to the use of rice rather than rose petals if we have to do it at all. Rose bushes have thorns, remember, and I have not seen a rose without thorns on its stems. The thorns for me represent hardships and problems, so why use rose petals in stead of rice which represents plenty?

Well. thank you for this good question. I live in Australia and it has been a long time since I have been to wedding.
I know over here you are not allowed to throw confetti at a church, at the beach or a park.
I know this has nothing to do with this, but many years I went to the movies to see "Rocky Horror Picture Show" at the beginning at the show there is a wedding. At the time the picture theatre encouraged people to through rice in it. So my girlfriend and myself throw miles of it. The people in front were not happy.
But boy was it fun, so was throwing confetti.
I suppose which country you live in whether of not you can throw rice.

It's just a symbol of christening the couple with good luck, same with bird seed or confetti. I think they started with rice b/c it was "white" following in the tradtion of the "white wedding."

Rice is a symbol of fertility. Unfortunately it also kills birds who eat dry rice and die from the rice swelling in their craws.

Old traditions.
Some people believe rice will give you good luck.

And some people believe that dreaming of snakes means pregnancy of you or someone you know...

Go figure.

i'm sure it has something to do with "the harvest" for always being blessed with enough food or something, but most places don't let you anymore because it is not good for the wild bird. the bubble companies are now making a killing!

Do they still do that? I thought they didn't anymore because it's bad for the birds to eat.
