It doesn't. Where do you get this idea from ?
In the past while it was expanding it had to defend itself from specific attacks brought against it as a religion via the legal system. This is a basic right of any religion whose freedom is threatened. It has done so successfully and is now a recognised religion in most countries where it operates. These attacks have stopped.
Freedom of speech is also a basic right.
People say bad things and express their opinions. These opinions may or may not be based on facts but we all have the right to speak. That's what freedom is about.
Nobody is suing anybody for saying bad things about religions.
If this were not the case this forum would be in deep doo doo ,
from several religions, not just Scientology.

Huh?
With so many well-known sites talking bad about them and being so good at making sure everyone sees them, how can that be true? Most people can name the anti sites easier than they can the pro sites.

Heck every question on it posted here gives a ton of material for such lawsuits :)

It's much akin to the Old Testament portraying a God that smites those who don't believe in him. It's all about public relations. The best way to promote a religion is to convince everyone it's the only right one, and the less criticism it allows, the more right it seems.

Because if people knew it was a cult then it would be harder for them to recruit people. I read a lot about it a while back and it is crazier and more foolish than you probably think.

Because usually the things either aren't true or they are taken out of context - its called defamation....it is illegal and something which can land you in court!
