There are two types of diverse tongues spoken of in the Bible.
Heavenly, which is used to pray and speak to God on His level.
Earthly language sometimes old dialect, which is sometimes used for speaking to other people which you could not have learned.
Every Christian can get the heavenly language. Not everyone is called for the other earthly language.

There are two different types of tongues: 1. is for the build up of the church and needs a translation. 2.the second is a Heavenly language in which you are speaking to God~~~when you speak in tongues you can pray to God and the devil can not understand you, but God can understand everything.

I have a friend who was at a convention dinner once and all of the sudden he started speaking in tongue. Unknown to him he was speaking perfect Farsi and one of the waiters understood his entire message and was moved to tears. True story.

speaking in tongues is a gift, but can be virtually nothing but babbling if someone is not present who can give translation to what is being said. pentecostal churches have it in their churches, but it is just babbling when not translated by someone present. beware of this.
