Okay, I know some people have very fragile and sensitive hair that requires a professional touch.
But I don't get why my friends spend a fortune to have their hair colored at a salon, then hate it, then go back to get it fixed, then complain that it was not what they wanted. Drug store hair color is easy, cheaper, you pick whatever color you want, and you know what? A lot of stylists can't even tell if mine was done in a salon (it wasn't).

And don't give me that BS that store-bought dye is "one dimensional" or they just went to bad stylists. I don't buy it!!

Okay everyone, I am starting to realize that I am lucky. I feel awful for those of you who have turned pink/green/orange!!! :)
Stylists, you have a tough job and thank you for saving those of us who do have horrible mishaps!!!

Personally I go to the salon to have mine done just because I feel more comfortable with it. Plus then you have someone to say "you know maybe you should go with this color because it will compliment you skin tone better." Also they have experience they know what color I'm going to get. You don't always know that with a box. I have done it both ways and if I wanted to dye it and didn't have the money to get it done professional I would do it with the box again. Another thing is sometimes highlights can be hard to get to look "natural" when done at home.

Because you get a single flat color from the box. The way color is professionally dyed provided laters that create depth. The reason your little friends don't like it is because they don't know what they want and are just playing at being grown-up. Or, they're going to the crappy little salons they can afford, but that don't really provide a quality service.

P.S. I think your hair person is just being polite.

Not everyone has the gift of coloring their hair no matter how easy the directions on the box are supposed to be. Many worry that color will reck a perm or the color will come out wrong. Personally I tried a color that came out orang instead of chestnut brown and I rued the day I ever tried to dye it myslf...

I wish more people would dye their own hair. I have built a career out of people with do-it-their-self dye jobs. Your lucky yours has gone well. When it does go bad though, and you have to go to a salon, remember this mantra by Robert Cromeans: "Quit your bitchen, you did it in the kitchen." I think of hair color projects as art projects, you need to know your medium but beyond that its not rocket science, maybe you understand what your doing and lots of others don't, but if you don't you too could find yourself one of the legions of orange (green, blue, or hot pink) accidents.

My Friend went to beauty School.&& The reason that they go There Is Cuz it's not as Harsh on your hair when the salon does it. I Don't know what they put in the dye but it's not as brutal as the Drug stores! Lol ;)

Dear God I'll tell you why, my hair is neither fragile or sensitive, but the last time (5 yrs.ago) I dyed my own hair it turned a lovely shade of green, then I HAD to go to the hairdresser to get it fixed, THEN it turned a lovelier shade of pinkish, until she finally got all the cheap crap out of my hair and back to my original color. Which by the way I hadn't seen in some time. Too scary!!!!

if you dye your hair in a salon for one its better for your hair, it also has a right amount of ammonia in it which is easy to dye over. notice when you dye your hair from a box then dye it another colour it can turn out completely different, well its because in boxed dye the companies put alot of ammonia in it to keep the colour from fading as long. with salons you dont have that.

There is no way I can do foil highlights. Also drug store hair colors are very harsh and can damage your hair faster than salon grade products

I guess that some of those people want to be able to go back and be redone, and have someone to complain to. Others may just be too lazy to dye their own hair - or may have tried to with miserable results. Everyone in my family who colors does it themselves.

I always dye my own as well, and sometimes it has required two boxes. I did let my "professional hairstylist" friend do it for me once but I swear she missed spots and I didn't want to be rude so I didn't ever say anything but colored it myself from then on.
