It is definitely not too late to neuter your 2 year old dog.

Not only is neutering a demonstration of responsible pet ownership (by not creating unwanted or "accident" litters), but it can also prevent many diseases related to sexual organs.

Neutering will also make your dog less likely to wander your neighbourhood, get into territorial fights, and diminish his desire to "hump".

Actually, sterilizing your animal before he's full grown has also been shown to increase the height of the dog - but this will likely not be the case with your friend, unless he's a giant breed and is still growning.

Some vets offer a "low-cost" spay/neuter program. I know, for example, that in my city, dogs up to the age of six months can receive a discount whereby the vet pays a quarter of the cost, the city pays a quarter and you, as the owner, pay for the last half.

It never hurts to make enquiries of your vet - perhaps there are low-cost incentives in your area.

Some vets will also tattoo or microchip your pet (usually at an additional cost) in order to provide a permenent proof of ownership - something your dog can't lose (unlike a collar or ID tag). This will help someone contact you in the event that he gets lost or stolen.

Microchips are available from several companies which operate all over North America and the cost of registration is usually included in the price of the chip (around $20.00 where i live).

Tattoos are also great because they are a visible form of ID which can usually be registered in your municipality. Some cities/areas tattoo in the ear, others on the flank or even inside the lip. Many breeders also tattoo in order to register animals also. Perhaps your dog has already been marked...

Anyways, I would encourage you to get him fixed - you'll be happier and so will he.

Good Luck!

No...never too late. Unless the dog is so old and ill that it could not handle anesthesia. I had my doberman neutered when he was 7 yrs old.

never too late but it may take slightly longer for the dog to forget some of its hormonal driven habits (eg.humping)
neutering eliminates some health risks seen in unfixed dogs so its best to do this for sure

Never! Otherwise Animal Shelters would not be doing it.

Better safe than creating unwanted puppies.
